劳工到精英—论美国华裔族群的美国梦

【摘要】：华人在美生活最早可以追溯到19世纪40年代末。那时的中国移民来到美国的主要目的是淘金或是寻找赚钱的机会。对于这些中国移民来说，美国梦等同于黄金梦或者说是金钱梦。他们的最终目标是赚足钱后返回中国而不是定居美国。这些早期移民多数是下层劳工。工资低，社会地位低，同时还受到不平等对待。与此形成鲜明对比的是现在的美籍华人，他们所追求的美国梦相比于早期移民的对金钱的实际追求来说更加的美国化和多样化。这些华人所追求的美国梦包含了对家庭，社会地位，经济状况以及民权的要求，，不再是简单意义上的以金钱为主的美国梦。 本文的研究主旨是美籍华人的美国梦。通过对书籍中及前人研究中美籍华人职业选择的改变，家庭组成的变化，居住地的多样化，社会及经济地位的提高以及政治参与度的加深，清晰地展示了美籍华人追求的美国梦的改变。同时，通过应用社会分层理论，文章给出了华人对美国梦不懈追求的原因。 作为中国移民的首选，美国梦依旧是中国人移民美国的重要原因之一。通过对美籍华人追寻美国梦的类型和原因的论述，也为新移民提供一个深入了解美国以及美国梦的机会。
