“救世之弊”与“改头换面”:李提摩太的《天伦诗》汉译

【摘要】:李提摩太1898年对《天伦诗》的汉译,既是其入华之后翻译观念的延伸,也是新教传教士整体上注重文字功用的显现,而且与晚清社会的变革需求有着具体关联。李提摩太将西方文明纳入基督教范畴的观念与做法,为其西学译介、文学活动提供了教义上的合法性,并且将明确的现实针对性融入了其中。原诗所蕴含的新古典主义思潮,对理性、秩序、逻辑等的诠释,与李提摩太的择取也正相切合。这一事件成为近代中西文学交流中的典型案例,将文化的碰撞与对接、翻译中的宗教与西学、译诗的文言形式与口语化、内容上融入的儒家观念与世俗意图等问题,以相互生发而又集中一处的方式给予了显现。探究其中存在的矛盾及历史合理性,有助于深入认识近代中国西诗汉译的过渡性演变与潜在意义。
[Abstract]:Li Timothy's Chinese translation of Tianlun Poetry in 1898 is not only an extension of his concept of translation after entering China, but also a manifestation of the Protestant missionaries' emphasis on the function of writing as a whole, and it is closely related to the demand for social change in the late Qing Dynasty. The concept and practice of bringing western civilization into the category of Christianity provided the doctrine legitimacy for its western translation and literary activities and incorporated the clear reality into it. The neo-classicism thought contained in the original poem, the interpretation of reason, order, logic and so on, is also in line with the choice of Timothy. This event has become a typical case in the literary exchange between China and the West in modern times, which involves the collision and docking of culture, religion and western learning in translation, classical Chinese forms and colloquial translation of poetry, Confucian concepts and secular intentions in content, and so on. To appear in the same way that they grow and concentrate on each other. The exploration of the contradictions and historical rationality is helpful to further understand the transitional evolution and potential significance of the Chinese translation of western Chinese poetry in modern times.
