【摘要】：劳伦斯曾经给他的朋友欧内斯特·柯林斯写过一封十分著名的信，在这封信中劳伦斯说：“我最伟大的宗教就是对血液与肉体的信仰”。——后来这种信仰被称之为“血液意识(blood-consciousness)”，学界对这封信有一个称呼叫“劳伦斯的血液宣言”。许多劳伦斯研究者都注意到了这封信并对“血液意识”产生了一定的兴趣。但是由于劳伦斯本人及其作品的复杂性，以及曾经很长一段时间内在文学史上的地位得不到确立和肯定的事实，另外“血液意识”可供研究的资料也较为分散和杂乱，导致了关于“血液意识”的一个研究现状——即几乎绝大多数劳伦斯研究者都注意到了劳伦斯这一思想，也都在关于劳伦斯的研究文章中涉及到这一问题，但却都是语焉不详，这也与该问题一直处于研究热点之外有一定关系。 “血液意识”作为劳伦斯的“最伟大的宗教”，事实上也是时代的产物，它的理论渊源于当时的几个著名思想家，经过劳伦斯独特个人经历的催化，结合他所涉猎的一些生理学知识，以《血液宣言》为其诞生标志。“血液意识”对劳伦斯的思想和创作都产生了难以估量的影响。在思想方面，他是劳伦斯起源于基督教的三位一体思想的核心，是劳伦斯所发现的解决自然和人类文明之间的矛盾、男人和女人之间的矛盾的关键，也是劳伦斯所认为的拯救即将灭亡的人类的唯一途径；在创作方面，尽管劳伦斯的“血液意识”是具有一定独创性的，但是与当时文学界的其他作家而言，也并非具有本质上的差异。但劳伦斯之难能可贵之处在于，当同样以非理性为主要导向的“血液意识”被内化到作品中之时，所呈现出来的是完全迥异于其他推崇非理性的作家流派的文学风格和文学形态，这是劳伦斯能够在英国文学乃至世界文学界占有一席之地的重要原因之一。因此，，在关于劳伦斯的研究专著和论文汗牛充栋之时，将这一个被忽略的问题加以研究，对于在前辈学者的研究基础上更加深入和深刻地理解劳伦斯有着十分重大的现实意义和研究价值，对于彼时的英国文学界的思潮和流派状况的理解，也有着一定的积极意义。
