[Abstract]:Universal consciousness refers to the understanding of the universe and man's position in the universe. Thomas Hardy pondered and explored the mysteries of the universe and the place of man in the universe, and incorporated this sense of the universe into his entire literary creation, including poetry, novels, and epic dramas, the Kings, over time. As early as 1866 at the beginning of Hardy's literary creation, it lasted until the 1920s. This paper focuses on Hardy's novel creation, and discusses the cosmic consciousness in Hardy's novels from two aspects: on the one hand, Hardy compares the Eagleton wasteland, which is covered with campfires, under the night as the starry sky. The distant distance between celestial planets is used as a metaphor for the relationship between human beings. On the other hand, Hardy not only makes the characters look up at the starry sky, but also lets the narrator freely change his view from the sky to look at the earth and the human being. By quoting and analogy with celestial planets, Hardy placed his novel world in a vast universe. Against the backdrop of the vast universe, the alienation and isolation of the hearts of the characters became even more tragic, and the human beings on the earth became more insignificant and helpless. Universal consciousness became a cause or expression of Hardy's pessimism.
