论薇拉·凯瑟小说中的拓荒主题

　　薇拉·凯瑟（Willa Cather，1873-1947）是近年来美国评论界所公认的20世纪美国最杰出的小说家之一，跻身于德莱塞、海明威、福克纳等作家行列。其作品多取材于家乡内布拉斯加，创作富有地方特色。作品结构匀称，节奏舒缓从容，文字清新优美。早期作品以西部边疆拓荒生活为题材，因此被认为是美国西部拓荒经历的象征。本文从薇拉·凯瑟早期发表的作品，即短篇小说集《轮唱花园》（1905）中的《瓦格纳日场》和中篇小说《波希米亚女郎》（1912）入手，挖掘作家在早期作品中对昔日西部拓荒生活的怀恋及对西部土地的深深眷恋之情。西部的生活虽单调、枯燥、压抑人性，但多年来人与自然的磨合却令逃离者难以割舍，而这块曾经荒芜、贫瘠的西部大地又犹如磁铁一般绊住了逃离者的双脚，使他最终回到了西部大地——母亲的怀抱。这恰恰暗含了凯瑟晚年对拓荒主题的回归。1913年发表的《啊，拓荒者!》这部确立凯瑟一流小说家地位的小说是作家写作生涯的一个重要里程碑。如果说在此之前凯瑟是怀着既厌恶又眷恋的矛盾之情来描述拓荒生活的话，那么在这部作品中，作家满怀深情地歌颂了东欧和北欧移民在西部拓荒过程中所体现的人性之美以及披荆斩棘、勇往直...
