[Abstract]:As for the rise and fall of great powers or the alternation of hegemony, so far geopolitical studies have not provided a general theoretical model based on geographical factors. Based on the analysis of the historical experience, especially the Chinese warring States system and the European and world systems since the 16th century, this paper puts forward a "center-flanking theory" systematically. It divides the powerful country into the central power located in the central region and the flank power in the flanking zone, and considers that the flank power has some important geo-strategic advantages over the central power in terms of the political significance of the center and flanking position. Accordingly, the center-flanking status affects the rise and fall of great powers. Being on the flank is more beneficial to the rise of great powers than being in the center. Since modern times, hegemonic powers have come from the powerful flanks. This theory can be regarded as part of the efforts of Chinese international relations scholars to develop their own international relations theory.
