留美外交家的跨文化身份与职业生涯(1911—1949)

2019正值五四运动的第一百周年。一个世纪前,中国外交家在巴黎和会上首次对西方列强说“不”,此次外交失败触发了国内爆发五四运动。历经百年沧桑,中国已经成为国际舞台上拥有强大影响力的外交大国。然而,“忘记历史意味着背叛”,今天我们仍需回顾那段中国人被认为是“东亚病夫”,中国遭受西方列强欺压的外交历史。中华民国时期是中国外交的一个重要历史阶段,期间中国由列强侵占的半殖民地一跃成为强国之一,恢复了晚清严重受损的主权。这样的外交成就与一群拥有美国教育背景的职业外交家们密不可分,如顾维钧,颜惠庆,施肇基等。在中国内忧外患的动荡时期,他们凭借流利的英语,在国际法,国际政治等方面所受的职业训练和对西方外交的熟悉,在国际舞台上崭露头角。然而,外交官的职业和西化的举止使公众对他们的品格产生怀疑,对他们的历史评价也是褒贬不一。他们常常被抨击为“卖国贼”,或沦为外交失败的替罪羊。考虑到这一历史时期的重要性,他们的群体身份和个体差异是一个值得研究的课题。再者,研究中国处在不利地位时期的外交实践能够给新时期的中国外交家们以启示。因此,本文旨在研究拥有留美背景的中国外交家的跨文化身份,并探索影响其跨文化身份形成的...
