英语词汇教学中母语翻译的作用

【摘要】：自从语法翻译教学法没落以来，在外语教学课堂中是否使用学生的母语成为语言学家和教师一直争论的焦点。虽然学生的母语在全世界的外语教学课堂中被广泛使用，但没有什么教学法支持它的使用，甚至有许多教学法对它的使用持反对意见。支持在外语教学课堂中使用学生的母语的文献的缺乏，加上专家和教师培训者对它的负面看法使得教师尝试在外语教学课堂中使用学生的母语以及在对它进行研究时也是小心谨慎。然而，近来理论和实践表明合理使用学生的母语可以对外语教学起到潜在的帮助作用。近来的研究也指向了母语的使用对外语教学的积极作用。 母语的使用对外语教学过程是起到妨碍还是促进作用呢？为了解答这个问题，本文针对英语词汇的短期记忆、长期记忆和恰当使用等三方面调查了母语翻译对英语词汇教学的作用。一百五十名具有相同英语水平的中国学生参与了实验。这一百五十名学生分别接受了三种不同的英语词汇教学过程。它们是通过中文翻译来教授英语词汇、通过英语定义来教授英语词汇以及把中文翻译和英语定义相结合来教授英语词汇。研究发现表明母语翻译对英语词汇的短期和长期记忆起到了积极作用，但在英语词汇的恰当使用方面，母语翻译既没有起到促进作用也没有起到妨碍作用。同时，一份带有十三个开放式问题的调查问卷被用来调查学生对在英语词汇教学中使用母语翻译的态度和看法以及他们实际学习策略使用之间的关系。研究发现显示参与调查者对在英语词汇教学中使用母语翻译的态度和看法以及他们实际学习策略使用之间是有偏差的。一方面他们倡导只使用英语，另一方面他们在英语词汇学习中实实在在地在使用母语翻译。此外，通过对比分析问卷调查结果和测试结果发现在对英语词汇教学策略的态度和看法、实际学习策略使用和学习结果三者之间存在着正面关系。 本文讨论了实验结果对现代英语词汇教学的意义，并在让学生认识到母语翻译的价值，重新考虑在现代英语语言课堂中只使用英语的策略，在英语语言教学界母语为英语的教师的主导作用，在现代英语语言课堂中合理使用学生的母语，双语教学材料的使用，，除了母语翻译其他技巧和策略的使用，显性和隐性教学方法相结合，以及根据特定环境灵活使用具体的教学方法等方面提出了建议。
