Introduction
Shawn Hunt is a seventeen year old black teenager, who has undergone numerous changes since he began attendingBishop Loughlin Memorial High School.Three years ago, this former courier for drug dealers was armed and headed, many thought, for jail. Today, however, he’s an honor student, an active and talented athelete, a valued employee, and a youth leader at his church. He even has plans to attend Clark-Atlanta University (Rimer, 1993).
Shawn’s upbringing has been full of difficulties. His family is fiscally challenged. He grew up in Coney Island, the son of an alcohol and drug addicted now-absent father. Shawn’s father’s behavior and lack of commitment to his family has been an ongoing source of contention. His mother, despite being both diligent and kind, is frequently preoccupied—largely by the need for her to commit herself to grueling hours of work in order to support her family—leaving her little time to address Shawn’s difficulties.
