Firstly, in this paper, the background and influences of Diamond Model will be discussed. Secondly, the commercial banking industry in five countries will be analyzed on the basis of the six broad factors of Diamond Model. And then this paper can explain how convincing is Porter’s Diamond Model in explaining the characteristics and performance of business systems of the major industry. In the end of the paper, three major weaknesses of Diamond Model will be discussed. There are also many different kinds of Diamond Models such as Double Diamond Model, Generalized Double Diamond Model and the Nine-factor Model. However, as these are easily fitted into the structure, they will not be contained in this paper.

2.  A background to the Diamond Model and its influence钻石模型的背景及其影响

Diamond Model was developed by an American economist Michael E Porter. It can be applied to analyze the theory of why particular industries become competitive in particular locations (Linden, 2012). According to Diamond Model, the integral competitive advantage of a country can be formed when all of its industries and products participate in international competition. And the key of the acquirement of competitive advantage lies in the integration of four basic elements and two subsidiary elements. These six broad factors incorporated into the Diamond Model and has become a key tool for the analysis of competitiveness (Vivienne, 2011). The four basic elements are factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, firm strategy, structure and rivalry. The two subsidiary elements are government and chance events. Porter created the Diamond Model on the basis of the four basic conditions. He considered that the firm of a nation can achieve success when the four conditions of certain industries or departments are at their best. Diamond Model is also a system which is strengthened by mutual promotion. As a result, the degree of function of any condition depends on the status of other conditions.

12.  Conclusion总结

According to the above analysis, it can be seen that Porter’s Diamond Model can explain the characteristics and performance of national business systems. After analyzing the factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, firm strategy, structure and rivalry, government and chance events of commercial banking industry in the two nations, their national business systems can be compared and analyzed in detail. Although Diamond Model has some weaknesses and limitations, it can be replenished and developed by other theories. Analyzing the national business systems is significant for the countries to improve their certain industries.
