We have considered your submission to Physical Review Letters. We ask
you to respond to the comments below before we proceed further.
We make no judgment on the correctness or technical aspects of your
work.  From our understanding of the paper's physics results, context,
and motivation, it is not clear to us why it would meet our criteria of
impact, innovation, and interest.  Our criteria require a clear justification
for consideration of the paper by PRL, rather than by a specialized
journal. Your work appears better suited for submittal to the latter.
We would be willing to consider a revised version of your paper, but
only if it makes a transparent and compelling case for publication in
PRL, as opposed to a more specialized journal. but

  file but we do need separate electronic figure files as well for
  production purposes. PostScript files should print correctly on a
  PostScript printer that has not had any fonts or scripts downloaded

第一段话说你的文章不适合他们的要求，你的文章更适合专业期刊。
第二段话说你可以修改重投，但是得改的更适合他们的要求

这个是助理编辑给的信件。还没有送出去审，因为他们觉得你的稿子更合适专业期刊而不是PRL。
如果你可以很好的指出为何你的稿子适合PRL，，他们可以（如果被你说服了的话）有一位副主编决定考虑是否送出去外审。
简而言之，好好写个东西解释你这个工作无比巨牛，他们再考虑是否送审。

编辑要你修改，重点是突出物理和创新。你最好认真修改，可能就一次机会，如果编辑还不满意的话，就没机会了。
我想你应该也写了cover letter，是不是没写清楚？
