【摘要】：斯义桂早年就读于上海国立音乐专科学校(上海音乐学院前身)，先后师从应尚能(1)教授及俄籍苏石林(Vladimir Grigoriyevich Shushlin，1895-1978)(2)教授主修声乐。毕业前后，即频繁演出于上海、南京、香港、重庆、天津、青岛、汉口等地：在抗日战争的大后方，在为前方将士募捐义演的音乐会上，他的歌声让人久久不能忘怀。 1947年斯义桂去美国，进一步的学习深造使他的演唱技艺更臻成熟并到达炉火纯青的境地。他的演唱足迹遍及美洲、欧洲、澳大利亚、新西兰、东南亚以及台湾、香港等地；与世界上许多著名的指挥家和管弦乐团合作过；曲目范围广泛，涉及不同时期、不同形式、风格的多种语言的声乐作品；汇中西方文化要义及审美观念于一炉，讲究神韵，，强调秀气，在用嗓及诠释上均有独到之处。其业绩获得广泛的认可与好评，被公认为是世界一流的歌唱家。他还演唱过大量的中国艺术歌曲和民歌，对于美声唱法中国化作了有意义的探索。 1970年起，斯义桂在美国克利夫兰音乐学院及罗切斯特大学伊斯特曼音乐学院担任声乐教职，后来更被伊斯特曼音乐学院聘为声乐系主任、终身教授。他将自己丰富的演唱经验融注到教学之中，培养了一大批高水平的学生。 1979年，为报效祖国，他专程到母校上海音乐学院讲学，把他多年来在西方从事演唱、教学的经验和盘托出，给予来自全国的声乐工作者以毫无保留的指导与帮助，并针对中国声乐界当时存在的问题予以及时的提醒和纠正，引起很大反响。
