矛盾思想的化身—杰克·伦敦笔下的拳击手形象研究

杰克·伦敦(1876-1916)生活在十九世纪末二十世纪初的美国,经历了美国历史上风云激荡的年代。这一时期的美国,经济发展迅速,工业化与城市化进程加快,多种社会思潮涌动,各种社会矛盾也层出不穷。与此同时,拳击运动也进入发展的重要时期,成为美国人生活中一项重要的体育运动。杰克·伦敦笔下的拳击手们为研究美国这一时期的时代特点和作家思想提供了极佳的素材。和其他作品相比,杰克·伦敦的拳击作品受到的关注较少。笔者以杰克·伦敦作品中的拳击手形象为研究对象,结合社会背景进行了文本细读,分析了其笔下拳击手形象所承载的时代内涵,揭示了杰克·伦敦思想中的矛盾特征。首先,拳击手身上体现了杰克·伦敦对待当时流行的社会达尔文主义的矛盾心态。随着资本主义的发展,企业间的竞争越来越激烈,强调“适者生存”社会达尔文主义在美国流行起来。伦敦笔下的拳击手兼具人性和兽性,拳击手的生存环境和自然世界-一样严苛,在其前期作品中拳击手间的竞争遵循了“适者生存”的法则,但后期作品中的拳击手们的竞争则打破了社会达尔文主义思想的桎梏,体现了“道德优越者”生存的法则。其次,拳击手身上反映了杰克·伦敦对待美国种族问题的矛盾态度。杰克·伦敦...
