[Abstract]:It is an innovative topic to treat literary translation from the literary point of view. The concept of literariness was put forward by Jacobson, a Russian formalist critic in the 20th century, who considered that "the object of literary study is not literature but literariness, that is, something that makes a particular work a literary work." Literariness is often manifested in language, rhetoric and stylistic style in literary translation. Based on literariness, this paper studies the Chinese translation of the Scarlet letter. Hawthorne's Scarlet letter is a masterpiece in the history of American literature. Its literariness is embodied in many aspects, among which prominent figures are figures, symbolism, poetic language and many themes. The main characters in the text have different symbolic meanings. The letter A runs through the whole story. It has different symbolic meanings for different characters at different times, and the use of different scenes is often rich in symbols. In addition, the poetic language of the Scarlet letter is also an important embodiment of its literariness. Irony is often used in shaping the image of those in power and the masses. The theme of the Scarlet letter allows for a variety of interpretations. We can interpret it from love, sin, redemption, and human nature. Religion, women's rights and so on look at it in many ways. By analyzing the literariness reappearance in the translation of the Scarlet letter by Shi Chuan and Yao Naiqiang, this paper demonstrates the retention, loss and compensation of literariness in literary translation. In the process of translating the Scarlet letter, both Shih and Yao strive to reproduce the literariness of the original text, but there is no denying that in this process, part of the literariness of the original text has been lost in the translation, such as when reproducing the characters. The decisiveness of Hester, the hypocrisy of Dimmesdale and the sadness of Chillingworth are weakened. The reappearance and loss of literariness in the translation also lead to different evaluation of characters in the history of Chinese and Western literature. The weakening of characters also leads to different interpretations of themes. The Scarlet letter is often associated with individualism in the history of western literature, while the history of Chinese literature is rare. This has a certain relationship with ideology, but translation also plays an important role in it. Moreover, in the history of Chinese literature, the symbolism of the Scarlet letter is mostly understated, because in the process of translation, the symbolic meaning of the character's name and letter A is more or less lost. Therefore, it affects readers' acceptance of this aspect of the Scarlet letter. Due to the fact that scholars in China have paid more attention to the characters, themes and symbolism of the Scarlet letter, poetical language is seldom mentioned in the history of literature.
