曹文轩《草房子》英译中“童趣”的失落

进入新世纪以来,基于童心童趣写作的现代中国儿童文学蓬勃发展,涌现了一批能和世界经典儿童文学作品相抗衡的佳作。中国正从儿童文学大国向儿童文学强国迈进。因而,把现代中国儿童文学推上国际舞台,引领不同肤色、不同国家的儿童感受中国文化就具有了不同凡响的意义。在国家“走出去”发展战略及新闻出版总署“中国图书对外推广计划”的推动下,中国图书海外出版获得了长足的发展。然而“走出去”大军更多地着力于成人文学,中国儿童文学作品屈指可数。即使被翻译成多种语言,汇入世界儿童文学的艺术版图,许多在国内享有声望的中国儿童文学作品在海外也是不温不火,尤其是欧美主流市场,更是惨遭滑铁卢。本文以曹文轩的代表作《草房子》为研究对象,从翻译角度一窥中国儿童文学海外遇冷的现状。作为我国新世纪的原创儿童文学杰出代表,曹文轩(1954-)擅长以温情的人文关怀和对儿童有趣言行的描绘来刻画纯朴儿童们的快乐生活,其多部作品被译为英文、法文、日文等。然而,由中外译者Sylvia Yu, Julian Chen和Christopher Malone联手翻译的《草房子》英译本在北美面世以来获得关注寥寥,且迄今为止,对于《草房子》的英译研究在国内外均尚未起步,因此本文选择《草》英译本作为研究对象,有一定的独创性。文章结合翻译理论,从儿童文学翻译的本质问题—童趣的移植和创造入手,分析《草》英译本中的童谣和拟声词翻译质量,探讨译者在翻译过程中是否跨越语言藩篱,较好地实现了童趣的再创造,旨在为中国儿童文学英译者提供切实可行的建议,以此推动中国儿童文学在英语世界的推广和接受。本文有以下发现总结:一方面,由于汉英分属不同的语系,汉英在节奏和韵律上截然不同的特征使得《草》英译者放弃美学特征的再造,仅仅移植了文本内容。非诗化译法在翻译童谣的过程中严重影响了童谣的可读性与儿童文学性,节奏和韵律等童谣必需元素的空缺使得译本更像是淡而无味的散文。同时,译者较多地采用了静态翻译,而非符合儿童好动本质的动态翻译,加速了英译童谣中童趣的丢失;另一方面,译者在处理拟声词时使用了删除、对译和增译三种翻译方法。间接拟声词和次要拟声词的过度使用,拟声词的单一性以及源本中近一半拟声词在翻译中被删除等现象都导致译本的声效与源本相比相形见绌。儿童通过声音感知世界的有趣方式在译本中无法得以充分体现,童趣自然消失殆尽。
