《奇境》中的困惑

　　乔伊思·卡罗尔·奥茨是当代美国文学中一位重要的女作家。《奇境》是她早期作品中的代表作之一。 本文对小说《奇境》的主题思想及其创作手法进行分析。 奥茨通过对男主人公杰西三十多年生活命运的描写，揭示了与杰西同时代的美国青年人在弥漫着种种极端个人主义思想的美国社会中，对自我的追求及其必然的失败结局所带来的精神困惑。奥茨也通过对杰西分裂人格的描写，对人格问题进行了探究，指出完整人格的形成是有其特定基础的，而在崇尚物质主义的美国社会中，人格只能被扭曲，甚至被摧毁。同时，奥茨也见解独到地提出了对人格进行救赎的途径。另外，在小说中奥茨也显露了其对女性命运的关注，揭示了女性在男性统治的社会中自我完全丧失的悲惨现实。 在小说的创作手法方面，奥茨在这部作品中较以往更多地突破了单一现实主义的写作风格的束缚，在继续沿袭其心理现实主义的写作技巧的基础之上，采用了象征主义、典故暗示和怪异等现代派文学的创作手法。
