悲剧以其独有的震撼力在世界文学史上占有重要地位，公元前五世纪的希腊是悲剧的发源地，产生了一些伟大的作品。莎士比亚时代的悲剧作品在文学史上也有极其重要的地位。但后来传统意义上的悲剧作品和悲剧人物不多见了。然而英国作家托马斯哈-代的悲剧小说以其独特的魅力在十九世纪末页英国文学中占有一席之地。卡斯特桥市长虽不是其最杰出的作品，却典型反映了哈代人类无法掌握自己命运的悲剧主题，主人公亨查德也是哈代创作的最具特色的悲剧人物之一。 亨查德的悲剧与传统的悲剧人物有许多相似之处：自身性格缺陷使其犯下大错，再加上恶势力的打击和命运的作弄，导致他们事业失败，名誉受损，最终以受难、死亡或失败而告终。但是由于特定的历史条件，亨查德的遭遇是人物性格和社会发展的必然性交错起作用的结果。性格是导致其悲剧的原因之一，也是内在因素，外在因素对其命运的影响也不容忽视。当时的英国正处于政治经济大变革的前夕，亨查德对这一过度时期的不适应是导致其失败的重要原因。 以往我国对文学作品的评论突出的是阶级社会矛盾，西方评论则轻视社会影响而强调人物性格的冲突。本篇尝试运用分析对比手法，既从人物性格及人物关系方面寻找主人公悲剧...
