翻译与制约：希拉里回忆录《亲历历史》及《活出历史》中译本

【摘要】：90年代以来,翻译与制约成为翻译学的新课题,然而,学者多研究西方的翻译与制约,审视译入语文化中各参与者的制约作用,从公共制约和自我制约的角度讨论,关注翻译如何抑制言论。尽管有少数学者研究中国内地建国初期到文革时期的翻译与制约,但关于改革开放以后的翻译与制约的研究却存在着空白,改革开放以后,翻译与制约的关系变得更复杂、更微妙,值得深入研究。此外,结构制约的重要性也被忽视,而且对源语文化参与者的行为,以及翻译与制约在中国内地对言论的正面影响等讨论不足。 本文就希拉里回忆录中国内地译林出版社中译本《亲历历史》进行个案研究,总结作者希拉里与《亲历历史》出版社译林之间的纠纷,研究操控痕迹最为明显的第22章和第33章,对比原文、译林中译本《亲历历史》以及台湾中国时报中译本《活出历史：希拉里回忆录》。由于译林译本和中国时报译本于同年出版,由同一批译者翻译,语言和出版时间造成的差异不大,而译林译本是以中国时报译本为基础进行翻译和编辑,对比两个译本能突显文化因素的作用,而第22章和第33章从美国的角度讲述中国内政、中美关系等,涉及中美意识形态的不同,加上作者希拉里对中国态度一直不友好,有些观点可能有失公允,所以本个案研究能显示意识形态及内地制约的作用。本文从公共制约、结构制约和自我制约的角度阐述中国内地翻译与制约的关系,详细分析公共制约因素,包括中央及地方的制约机构和法律法规、结构制约因素,包括政府架构、意识形态教育和译林出版社所有制,以及自我制约因素,包括出版社、编辑和译者的自我制约,揭示可能导致《亲历历史》制约的原因,认识中国内地的翻译与制约现象。 本文通过案例分析对中国内地翻译与制约有三个新的理解,第一,来自源语文化的作者、原文出版社和传媒也制约译作,以了解译入语文化如何制约译本,而非只有译入语文化参与者进行翻译制约。其此,尽管多数中国学者只从公共制约和自我制约的角度研究翻译与制约,但是为了更全面理解本课题,应该同时检视结构制约,研究场域和惯习对翻译和制约的作用,因为结构审查影响公共制约和自我制约的模式、程度和实施,同时联系着公共制约和自我制约,场域和惯习的不同,决定着出版社、译者、编辑等跟据制约机构的规定、法律法规进行自我制约的意愿和主动性。此外,译入语文化参与者进行的制约和源语文化参与者进行的制约共同作用,导致本来被抑压的言论更为人所知。
