翻译与中国形象再塑:形象学视角下翟理斯《笑林广记》英译研究

翟理斯(1845-1935),英国著名汉学家。毕生致力于介绍中华文明,他翻译了大量中国文学作品,其推出的《笑林广记》译本是迄今为止外译史上出现最早、翻译篇目最多的节译本,而对该译本展开研究的文献几乎为零。18世纪后期起,西方文学作品中的中国形象一落千丈,西方对中国的批评越来越多,越来越尖锐,以致到了偏执和不公正的程度,文学作品中处处存在着丑化中国形象的作品,而翟理斯笔下的中国却是基于他在中国真实生活的基础上刻画的。因此本文在形象学视角的指导下分析翟理斯在其作品《笑林广记》英译本中对中国形象的重塑。形象学作为比较文学的一个重要领域,主要研究文学作品中的异国异族形象,探究文学作品中异国形象发生变化的诸多原因。文章按照形象学的研究方法,从文本内部和外部分析展开,内部分析包括词汇、等级关系和故事情节三个层次;文本外部分析包括译者所属的社会集体想象和其信息的来源、对中国的态度和情感,指出《笑林广记》英译本中“他者”形象往往在词汇、等级关系层面发生变异,译者重塑“他者”形象的过程中很大程度上会受到其本国社会集体想象物和自身对于异国的想象、情感和态度的影响。本文分析了19世纪中国作为“他者”在西方人...
