[Abstract]:The short story Lispas is one of the famous works of British writer Kipling. Kipling was born in India. Most of his works are based on India, where he was born, showing all aspects of colonial India. Therefore, Kipling is often regarded as a professional writer in the service of imperialism, and his colonial writing of India is often the focus of research by scholars and experts. To this, this article holds a different view. This paper mainly adopts the research mode of text reading, reading Kipling's Lispas, quoting the theory of postcolonial cultural identity, and taking the cultural identity as the starting point. This paper probes into the cultural identity of the heroine Lispas in the novel and interprets it post- colonial. In the novel, Lispas is an Indian adopted by the British, whose cultural identity has been moving between the colonial British culture and the native Indian culture. How to seek the perch and balance of one kind of cultural identity in two conflicting cultures is the connotation of this short story. The construction and writing of the heroine Lispas' cultural identity reflects the writer Kipling's deep thinking and research on the issue of cultural identity. He contradicts and hesitates in the two conflicting cultures. Instead of wholeheartedly supporting the colonial British Empire, he deeply loves India, which is reflected in the orientation and writing of the final identity of Lispas in the novel. In the novel, Lispas finally gave up the British cultural identity and returned to the native Indian cultural identity. Kipling's short story Lispas embodies Kipling's love of India. Through a close reading of Kipling's works, we find that Kipling is not a completely imperialist writer. This paper hopes that this study can provide a new perspective for the current Kipling study and give Kipling a fair position.
