[Abstract]:Jude the nameless is the last novel of Thomas Hardy, a famous realistic novelist in the late Victorian period, and one of his most influential masterpieces. As to the tragic reasons of Jude and Shu in the story, scholars have studied from different vision. However, this paper argues that the causes of Jude and Shu's tragedy are both personal character defects and external factors, namely Victorian morality, educational values and patriarchalism. It is necessary to explain why we only choose to analyze Jude and Shu's tragedy. After all their efforts, their noble ideals could not be realized for various reasons, resulting in tragedy. This embodies courage and value, is the real tragedy, while the others are not. Based on this premise, this paper discusses the profound significance of this book from two aspects: personal character defect and external factors. In addition to the introduction and the end, this article is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the social background of Jude and Shu's life, mainly including the Victorian society of morality, education, women; the second part on the basis of the first part, It is briefly explained that Jude and Shu's tragedy is intrinsically related to Victorian society. The second chapter discusses the causes of Jude's tragedy. The first part discusses the causes of Jude's failed dream of university and holy ministry and how it caused his tragedy. Jude's humble social status was the main reason for his university dream to be dashed, and the Victorian morality was the main reason for the failure of his holy dream. The second part discusses Jude's love tragedy. Victoria's moral view brought great pressure to Jude's love, and finally became an important cause of his love tragedy. The third part discusses Jude's character defect and one of the reasons why it became his tragedy. The third chapter discusses the causes of the tragedy. The first part introduces the identity of the female Victorian morality victim, then the tragedy of the female, the second part introduces the tragedy of the new female. As a woman, she must abide by the moral requirements of the Victorian era, but as a new woman, her pursuit violated the moral requirements of that time. This contradiction, along with the third part of the personality defects of Shu, led to the tragedy of Shu. This thesis argues that the Victorian social maladies-morality, educational values, patriarchy and the personal defects of the protagonists and heroines-led to the tragedy of Jude and Shu. Through the analysis of their tragedies, this paper further excavates the deep value of this book, and reflects on the influence of social ills on the survival of human beings in order to promote the individual's realistic thinking of life.
