[Abstract]:Ben Johnson (June 11, 1572-August 6, 1637) was an English Renaissance playwright, poet and actor. As a contemporary playwright with Shakespeare, he was best known for his satirical plays, especially Foxperney, Alchemy, Bartholomew Market, which were thought to be his famous plays. Ben Johnson had an unparalleled influence as a playwright and poet during the periods of James I and Catherine. "Bartholomew Market" is the last comedy of Ben Johnson's four great comedies. In some ways, the play focuses on the conflict between enjoying the physical orgy and controlling social order. This paper attempts to use Bakhtin's carnival theory to analyze Bartholomew's Market, to study the spirit of carnival embodied in the script and the construction of Ben Jonson's Carnival World. The characteristics of Carnival in Bartholomew's Market are the main theme of this comedy. Plot structure, characters, and language aspects of some carnival elements are displayed. The theory attempts to analyze the comedy from a new perspective in order to fully understand the author and the intent of his work. This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the "carnival" contained in the theme of Bartholomew Market. Bakhtin's "carnival" theory is regarded as an important part of his theory. A unique angle of view to express the literary reality of non-mainstream culture to mainstream social life institutionalization, hierarchy, a conventional resistance. The three main themes reflected by Ben Jonson in the Bartholomew Market, the subversion of official religious rules, the carnival economy, the coronation and de-coronation are all subversions of social institutionalization, hierarchy, and regularization. Achieve a comic carnival effect. The second chapter discusses the carnival scene of Bartholomew Market. The two scenes depicted, the market and Ursula's bar, reveal the spirit of revelry. The third chapter talks about the carnival characters of Bartholomew Market. In this paper, the author chooses several representative roles to reveal the spirit of revelry. The last chapter analyzes the carnival language of the comedy. This chapter mainly through the carnival language rhetoric and other carnival language manifestations. We can draw a conclusion that Bartholomew Market is a funny comedy of the Middle Ages, which is characterized by four aspects: the theme of carnival, the scene, the characters and the language.
