[Abstract]:Edith. As an outstanding prolific American writer, Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize. Wharton's literary idea of "Art for Life" runs through her entire literary career. As a keen observer, she portrayed a vivid picture of New York society at the beginning of the twentieth century. Her first novel Happy Homes mainly describes the social life of New York aristocrats and became a bestseller soon after its official publication in 1905 thus establishing her prominent position in the history of American literature. Since Happy Homes was published, many scholars have studied this work with different critical methods. Among them, using feminism to study the novel heroine Lily for the majority. This thesis uses Lacan's subject theory to study the heroine Lily in this novel in order to reveal the importance of personal psychological development and analyze the decisive effect of social environment on personal growth. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, which introduces in detail the literary status of Wharton and the general situation of Happy Homes, the purpose and significance of this thesis. The second chapter is about the literature review of the novel system at home and abroad. The third chapter introduces the theoretical basis of this paper: Lacan and its main body theory. The fourth chapter is the discussion part of the paper, including three main parts. The first part mainly analyzes Lily's self-formation in the imaginary world. Lily's knowledge of the outside world cannot be separated from the necessary "other"-initially her parents. Under the influence of her parents, she constructed a confused self and continued to pursue her ideal self. The second part discusses Lily's hardship in symbolism. She still makes every effort to pursue her ideal self through marriage, friendship, and her career. Under the bondage of a patriarchal society, a series of her attempts were futile. Her resistance to the father's law plunged her into a miserable situation. The last part explains Lily's desire to return to the real world and her death to the integrity of her heart. The last chapter is a summary. Lily's self-exploration is in fact a process in which she seeks her own subjectivity. Lily's loneliness and final death can be attributed to her chaotic self-construction in the mirror-image phase and her resistance to the Law of the Father in symbolic circles. Her final return to the real world was the beginning of her new life.
