[Abstract]:Bullpen incident is the first novel published by Walter van Tilberg Clark, a famous American western novelist, and his masterpiece. The novel subverts the traditional writing routine of American western novels and tells the story of three innocent people being lynched because they are mistaken for cattle thieves, thus laying the author's position in the western American fiction world in one fell swoop. Since its publication in 1940, the Niu Lan incident has quickly aroused a strong response among readers and western novel critics, known as "the best novel of the year." Critics have discussed the novel from different angles, such as the theme, character, structure, writing techniques and so on. Although the psychological factors in the works are mentioned, there is no psychological point of view, especially Jung's theory of collective unconscious, to analyze the critical articles of this novel. On the basis of previous studies, combined with Jung's collective unconscious and its core content, this paper dialectically interprets the themes and characters in the Niu Lan incident, excavates the ugliness of human nature in the works, and carries forward the goodness and beauty of human nature, so as to help readers appreciate the work more comprehensively and deeply. Combined with the archetypal concept in the theory of collective unconscious, this paper interprets the behavior and internal causes of the people's groups in different stages, analyzes the human nature of the main characters, and thus highlights the theme of the works. Through the collective unconscious analysis of the works, this paper attempts to reveal Clark's deep observation of human nature and show the profound humanistic care and immortal artistic charm in the works. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces the novel bullpen event and its author, and expounds the purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter is the literature review, which reviews the domestic and foreign scholars' research on the Niu Lan event, and then points out the limitations of the novel research and the feasibility of using the collective unconscious theory to interpret the work. Finally, it introduces the framework of the paper. The third chapter focuses on the theoretical framework of collective unconscious, including the formation and development and its core content. The fourth chapter analyzes the behavior driven by collective unconsciousness in the work, including organizing the people's groups, tracking the suspect, executing punishment, and revealing the theme of the work. The fifth chapter focuses on the analysis of the typical characters in the bullpen event through the corresponding archetypes in the collective unconscious. The conclusion part of the sixth chapter summarizes and summarizes the full text, and points out the shortcomings and the future research direction.
