张爱玲小说的现代性再探

【摘要】:本文运用现代性的理论框架,考察了"五四"新文化运动以来中国现代文学发展的脉络。在看到"五四"新文学对"现代性"的利用存在"传统/现代"、"东方/西方"二元对立的思维缺陷后,本文找到了在某种程度上突破了这一缺陷的文学样本——张爱玲,重新用文学历史"整体观"的眼光对张爱玲的小说现代性进行分析。张爱玲是一位对传统文化有自信心、善于从传统文学中寻找资源的作家。因此,《传奇》时期的张爱玲小说,实际上是从她独有的现代观出发,描绘了一条中国社会特有的现代化道路。这条道路背后一直有着隐隐的传统文化力量在支撑。在张爱玲描绘的新旧交杂、中西交杂的中国社会背后,是人生荒凉的底色,这使张爱玲的作品充满了独特的反讽意味。另外,张爱玲这些思想,都通过她纯熟的叙事技巧才得以展现。由于创作环境的改变,张爱玲创作的后期,"自译"和"重写"成为了她写作的主旋律。张爱玲一心以英文写作在美国立足却宣告失败,因为她的英文表达无法被英文世界的读者理解。她的英文中出现了太多"硬译"以及"不英不中"的表达,这与她对中国传统和中文表达方式的依恋有关。而她前期代表性的"意象化叙事"在英文中也丧失了表达作用。即使张爱玲做过一些在细节上吸引西方读者努力,比如加入一些对中国猎奇的因素。但因为她实际上仍然站在一个认同中国文化的立场上,所以她也没有意识到自己的努力其实是失败的。除此之外,结合张爱玲一遍遍重写自己过去的故事的行为,我们看到的是她用不同视角来叙述幼年那个传统家庭的故事的强烈愿望。张爱玲对于自己的创作,也秉持着并不"线性"的现代观。最后,本文得出的结论是,张爱玲是一位真正站在中国文化立场的作家。从她小说现代性的角度来看,她吸收现代思想的同时,也深刻认同传统文化的价值。"苍凉"的底色,正是因为中国社会在自主现代化的过程中所必然陷入的一种境地。
