[Abstract]:The ability to accurately measure time has had a huge impact on society, ranging from ocean navigational timers (in 18th century) to the basic equipment of spaceborne atomic clocks (today's Global Positioning system (GPS)). What are the basic limitations of physics on our ability to measure time? In a new paper, Paul Erker of the University of Autonomous in Barcelona, Spain, and his colleagues believe that thermodynamics plays a key role in such limitations. Consider a simple quantum clock model. They built a quantitative relationship between accuracy and resolution.
