Effect of therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine five element music and electroacupuncture on the depression levels of cancer patients

Objective To explore the effect of therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine five element music and electroacupuncture on the depression levels of cancer patients.Methods Ninety-two cancer patients were recruited and divided randomly into experimental group(n=46) and control group(n=46). Patients in the experimental group listened the TCM five element music and underwent electroacupuncture therapy for four weeks. And patients in the control group just listened TCM five element music. Hamilton Depression Scale (HDMA), Self-depression Scale(SDS) and Karnofsky Function Position Scale(KPS) were uesed to investigate the patients respectively.Results The result showed that there were significant differences between the scores of patients before and after the therapy in the two groups. But there were not significant differences between the two groups after the therapy.Conclusions TCM five element music therapy has positive effect on helping depression of cancer patients while electroacupunctur therapy does not enhance the effectiveness.
