On Tocqueville’s Comparative Method in Democracy in America

本文的研究宗旨是探究托克维尔社会政治思想和他在《论美国的民主》中比较方法的使用之间的关系,从而证明比较方法之于托克维尔民主理论的重要性。作者希望通过研究托克维尔所使用的比较策略以及使用这些比较策略的原因及产生的效果对托克维尔的作品实现进一步的理解。托克维尔的社会政治思想的核心在于他对自由的至高价值的认知,他的民主理论最显著的特征是思想的中立性,即一种平衡、灵活又谨慎的民主观。本文认为比较方法对于托克维尔的中立性思想至关重要,因为托克维尔通过比较得以从各种不同的角度来看待现代民主。托克维尔的比较贯穿整个作品的各个层次,比较策略复杂多变;本文将其归结为两种类型:时间比较和空间比较。时间比较,即专制制度和现代民主之间的比较使他认识到现代民主所面临的挑战;空间比较,即各个国家之间的比较,尤其是美法两国之间,使他认识到建立在民情、传统基础之上的民主的优越性,并看清通过革命手段实现民主的弊端所在。托克维尔通过这两种比较策略主要对两组研究对象进行了比较,微观政治体制和民情。托克维尔的比较还存在一些问题,如时间与空间比较的含混以及概念的模糊;然而,尽管存在这些问题,他仍然不失为一位社会政治科学的比较大...
