【摘要】：《妙法莲华经》是中国佛教史上有着深远影响的一部大乘佛教经典。该经书一度被称作“半个亚洲的福音书”。由于契合中国传统文化,翻译之后各种版本广为流传。通过调查发现,广大学者对《妙法莲华经》的译本进行了孜孜不倦的研究工作,其中对其汉译本的研究不胜枚举,英译本研究却寥若星辰。作为一名职业的汉学家,而不再是单纯的传教士,苏慧廉在翻译《妙法莲华经》的过程中必定有其独特的处理方式,这正是笔者认为该研究的价值所在。本文将以“翻译史研究方法中的‘译者为中心’理论”和“比较文学形象学中的‘自我’与‘他者’”为方法论指导,并以译者的汉学家身份为视角,对苏慧廉的《妙法莲华经》译本进行研究,试图探究苏慧廉翻译此经的真正动机,揭示出以一名严谨的职业汉学家的身份翻译此经,苏慧廉,相对于先前其他的一些传教士译者而言,已摈弃固有的基督教偏见,翻译更加客观、准确,简明,进而揭示其翻译的真正动因是为西方学者研习佛经之用。
