菲茨杰拉德在二十世纪美国文学中被公认为“迷惘的一代”作家,,他塑造了战后的人物形象。角色大多年轻男性和女性谁想要追求的梦想,有紧密的内在关系在这些人物的人生经历和精神方面。从这些内部关系,我们不仅可以看到菲茨杰拉德所追求的“美国梦”的梦想,过程,也可以定义“美国梦”“作为一种信念,一种渴望,一种梦想,一种思维,有充分的机会和财富在这片土地上。同样,有“美国梦”的人,如果他们遵循一套明确的行为准则,就能获得物质上的成功。这些“美国梦”的定义反映在Franklin, Jefferson, Edison和其他第十八岁的言行中。Fitzgerald is recognized “Lost Generation” writer in 20th century American literature and he shaped the characters after the war. The characters are mostly young men and women who want to pursue dreams and there are closely internal relations among these characters in life experiences and spiritual aspects.From these internal relations, not only we can see the processes that Fitzgerald pursuit the “American Dream” and the dream was shat, but also we can define the “American Dream” as one kind of belief, a desire, a dreamy, one kind of thinking that there are full of opportunity and wealth on this piece of land. Also, people with “American Dream” can achieve material success if they follow a set of clear standards of conduct to live. These defines of “American Dream” were reflected in Franklin, Jefferson, Edison and others who lived in 18th in words and deeds.

In this story, Nick is as the fist-person narrator and he tells us the story among Tom, Daisy, Gatsby, Jordan Baker and others such as West Side Story. We can see the decadent life of the upper class represented by Tom and Daisy. There are some descriptions the life among Gatsby and the upper class. Also, there are some social sad that Gatsby is not be accepted by the upper class though he tried his best and struggled lots of years in the end. 
Nick is a writer who is not famous from Midwest of New York, he lived beside a luxurious mansion belonged to Gatsby. Great banquets were held every night in that mansion and Nick met Gatsby in one of the great and full of interest banquet. Nick wanted to recognize and inquiry Gatsby and the result of the exploration was that there was a feeling deep inside of him.
When Gatsby was young he was a poor lieutenant commander. He fell in love with a beautiful girl named Daisy who loves him in some time.Then the World War I broke out, Gatsby was appointed to work in Europe.Seemingly accidental but it was inevitably, Daisy and Gatsby were broken up and Daisy married to a wealthy family dude named Tomimmediately.The marriage life of Daisy was not happy because his husband had another mistress. Daisy was full of material but being barren spiritually. Gatsby was deeply painful and he convinced that Daisy betrayed herpure heart because of money. Therefore, he determined to be a millionaire.A few years later, Gatsby succeed and he built a building across from the mansion of Daisy.From then on, Gatsby came to be a big spender and grand banquets were held all the night. Doing that was because Gatsby had extravagant hope that he could get her attention and could restore the lost love.
Nick was moved by Gatsby’s infatuation, he called on his contact distant cousin Daisy who was long-suppressed and he transmitted Gatsby’s mind to Daisy.Dasiy provocative Gatsby when she met him intentionally. Gatsby listened to her blankly because he thought there was a good ending of the feeling between them long time agonaively. However, a real tragedy curtained at that time quietly. Daisy was not the girl who Gatsby recognized before.Daisy just made the dubious relationship between Gatsby and herself as a kind of stimulation in her marriage life.It was too late when Nick had been aware of finally.Daisy dried car when she was terribly upset and the outcome was Daisy run over and killed her rival in love who was the mistress of her husband.Gatsby beard the responsibility for Daisy in order to protect her, however, Daisy had made up her mind to abandon Gatsby.Gatsby was shot dead by the mistress’s husband on the basis of Tom’s instigate.Gatsby had been the completely victim at last and even until his death he could not see the derisory smile on Daisy’s face.The reason of Gatsby’s tragedy was that he paid all of him to weave his beautiful dream and Daisy was just the embodiment of his ideal and Daisy had only beautiful shell.Although Gatsby had known that Daisy had with another and her voice was full of money, Gatsby did not change his original that he tried his best to pursuit of his dream tenaciously.Daisy and his husband had been on the trip to Europe when Gatsby’s funeral ceremony was held.There was a outcome of this feeling finally.Nick witnessed the false and felt disgust. At last, he came back home from the hustle, bustle, cold, empty and lonely metropolis.

In the ending part of the novel, Fitzgerald mentioned the trees are felled by Nick, the author realized thata piece of fresh green new world are lose its beyond recognition, due to over exploitation, excessive consumption, trees are disappear, dreams are shattered, the material needs may be met, the spiritual world is batteredjustas the natural environment.Human culture and the natural world are interrelated and mutual influence.
Therefore, man should live in harmony with nature, other species, others, and even himself, in order to maintain the interests of all parties in the ecological system balance, human must not protect their own interests at the expense of the interests of others.The three male characters in "the great Gatsby" could not live in harmony with themselves, and others, and nature, their thought and behavior revealnatural ecology, social ecology and spiritual ecology crisis behind highly developed of thematerial civilizationin twentieth Century 20 years USA.
