Chapter Four Analysis of Verbal Humor in the Perspective of Relevance Theory in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
4.1 Formation Mechanism and Interpretation of Humorous Effect
Humor is a combination of thought, temperament, intellect and inspiration. Usually humorous utterances have the function of conveying intentions. To correctly understand and appreciate the humor and to get the intention of the speaker, the hearer or the reader should have a good sensitivity of language, a relative rich knowledge about the background as well as a good cognitive ability and the inferential ability. The relevance theory holds that there is no direct and indirect relevant, but rather the different degree of how much they two are associated with each other. So the relevance theory can interpret the speech act of humorous utterances. The process can be divided into two steps, namely the inconformity stage and the resolution stage, among which there is a trigger for the second interpretation (Zhang Xin, 2003), which will be discussed later.
.........
Conclusion
The relevance theory holds that there is no direct and indirect relevant, but rather the different degree of how much they two are associated with each other. So the relevance theory can interpret the speech act of humorous utterances and explain how the verbal humorous effects are produced, although it is not specially designed to interpret the verbal humor. Relevance theory also has a strong explanatory power to all types of discourses, including verbal humor. Humor not only has aesthetic value and the function of entertainment but also can ease the environment, decrease the stress and bring harmony and friendship to people. ―Humor is the least and most paramount thing in the world. Knowing how to create it and how it works is one of the ideas to change one‘s life.‖ (Shibles, 2002) So the research of this topic is necessary. To correctly understand and appreciate humor, recipients / readers should have a good sensitivity about language, a relative rich knowledge about the background as well as a good cognitive ability and the inferential ability. The cognitive ability and the ability of inferring are closely related to relevance theory. The formation mechanism and interpretation of humor could be interpreted by relevance theory as following steps.
