概念整合新创空间关照下的汉语通感隐喩英译研究
1 Introduction
1.1 Background and Significance of the Present Study
Synaesthetic Metaphor is not only a figure of speech in traditional rhetoric, but also a kind of metaphor in Cognitive Linguistics. The English word Synaesthesia comes from ancient Greek, which means a mixing of different sensory categories. “Metaphoric expressions of the unity of the sense evolve in part from fundamental synaesthetic relationships but own their creative impulse to mind’s ability to transcend these intrinsic correspondences and forge new multisensory meanings”(Maks 1978:103) . That is to say, if a stimulus occurs in one sensory, it will also occur in another later. Then cross-space mapping happens among the sensory and new blended meanings will be established with the help of human beings’ mental association. Li Guonan (1996:39) points out that “Synaesthetic phenomena lie in hierarchical distributions, and in linguistic expression, the words expressing the lower-level sense, while in contrast the instances are obviously less.” That is to say, Synaesthetic Metaphor has a sensory-ranking. The low-level perception can be projected into the high-level perception. In other words, words in lower perceptual domain can modify those in higher perceptual domain. Conceptual Integration Theory is also called Conceptual Blending Theory which developed by Fauconnier and Turner on the basis of mental space theory. Fauconnier (2002:46) put forward four-space theory including input space I, input space II, generic space and blending space. Each space makes the corresponding connection through the cross-space mapping. “Conceptual integration theory(CIT), also known as conceptual blending theory, has been recognized as a powerful model of language processing and a potential solution to a number of problems in cognitive theory” (Gardy 2000:335). Conceptual Integration Theory is not only a significant but also a foundational theory of Cognitive Linguistics and it is always used to solve different kinds of problems. Gibbs (2000:347) points out “it promises an integrated model of cognitive activity that will combine explanations of linguistic creativity with explanation of other language behavior, as well as of various products of human imagination.” Conceptual Integration Theory has three basic processes which are composition, completion and elaboration. Elaboration will refine the structure in blend based on some principles, logic and imaginative features.

1.2 Research Questions
We all know that Cognitive Integration Theory has been studied for a period time, this paper focuses on the application of CIT to the English translation of new space of Synaesthetic Metaphor, by analyzing the English translation of Rice, trying to find out the proves for:
1. Is there any feasibility for application of Conceptual Integration Theory into the study on English Translation of Synaesthetic Metaphors in Chinese Contemporary Novels?
2. What is the exploratory power by using Conceptual Integration Theory to analyze the English translation of Synaesthetic Metaphors in Rice?
3. What are the effective principles and strategies for the English Translation of Synaesthetic Metaphors in Rice under the guide of Conceptual Integration Theory?

2.1 Synaesthetic Metaphor
This part attempts to make a brief introduction to Synaesthetic Metaphor and introduces the classification of Synaesthetic Metaphor from touch, taste, smell, hearing and vision. Furthermore, Synaesthetic Metaphor also has sensory-ranking from low-level perception to high-level perception. Synaesthetic Metaphor, also called Synaesthesia, derives from Greek in which “syn-” means together, and “-aesthesia” means perception. Thus, the word means “together perception”. Cytowic (1995) points out that “Synaesthesia is the involuntary physical experience of a cross-modal association, because the stimulation of one sensory modality causes perception in one or more different sense.” In part, Synaesthetic Metaphor is the unwilling physical experience and there is a cross-space mapping among the sensory domains. Wang Yulong (1996:36) defines it as following: A sensation produced in one modality when a stimulus is applied to another morality, the heating of a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain color. Those are two scholars’ definition of Synaesthetic Metaphor. We can conclude from above that Synaesthetic Metaphor is a situation if a stimulus occurs in one sensory morality and it will occurs in another later. Synaesthesia is an unconscious experience which could give rise to sensing. As a matter of fact, Synaesthetic Metaphor is not only the influence of two feelings but also the communication of many physical organs. One sensory modality’s stimulation would give rise to one or more different senses’ perceptions.

2.2 Su Tong and Rice
Su Tong, penname is Tong Zhonggui, who is an extraordinary talented and distinctive Chinese writer. Rice is Su Tong’s first full-length novel. He was born in 1963 and his hometown is Suzhou which is a beautiful city with a civilization of long standing. “He is an outstanding story-teller. With his exquisite and melancholy conception, all his writings is great manifestation of this nation” (Wang Dewei 1998:70). Su Tong was interested in literature when he was a child and he had published many works till now, including Rice, Qi Qie Cheng Qun, Bi Nu and so on. These literary works made him famous and led him to be the pioneer of the “new realistic” novel. So far, Su Tong holds the dominant position in the literary world because of his works. In 1980, he began to study in Beijing Normal University. During that time, he started his literary creation and was affected by the charm of literature in the open air. Therefore, he wrote many short stories which achieved a high level. In 1989, he published his celebrated work Qi Qie Cheng Qun and we all know that the international famous director Zhang Yimou’s movie Raise the Red Lantern is adapted from this work. “Though himself claims that ‘I gain little popularity at abroad’, heindeed is the biggest copy writer export writer who receive the most media comments in the West”(Ye Ying 2010:65). Furthermore, Su Tong is a writer who is always looking for innovation and his words left a deep impression on readers.

4 The Analysis of Goldblatt’s English Translation of Synaesthetic Metaphors in Rice
Conceptual Integration Theory (CIT) occupies an important position in cognitive linguistics which influences a lot of things in our daily life. Because CIT can help people get the information beneath the surface, it could be used to analyze the construction of Synaesthetic Metaphor. But few people combine them together to discuss English translation of Chinese novels. When translating books, different translators have different ideas. While, the difference between two languages which they are translating is the foremost thing they should be focused on. In order to convey the authors’ ideas accurately, the translator should be careful with the Synaesthetic Metaphors when translating Chinese literature works to English. Thus, the translators could transmit Synaesthetic Metaphors from source language to target language completely.
4.1 Synaesthetic Metaphors inRice
Because no one has researched the Synaesthetic Metaphors of Rice before, the writer has made great efforts to find them out. There are almost fifty Synaesthetic Metaphors in this full-length novel. It’s no wonder that there are so many Synaesthetic Metaphors in this novel, because it is widely used in our daily life. However, people don’t realize that what they are using is Synaesthetic Metaphor. Su Tong is one of the most famous writers in contemporary China who is good at using metaphors to describe people’s psychology. Rice is his representative work which is full of Synaesthetic Metaphors. Those can help making his characters more vivid and conveying his thought accurately. Howard Goldblatt who is a famous translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in America and he has translated many Chinese authors’ works into English. With his translation, Rice is known by more people both at home and abroad. We all know that different countries have different codes of languages, so when translating a literature work, the translator should pay more attention to the difference including the Synaesthetic Metaphor. Thus, this paper aims to use new spaces to analyze the Synaesthetic Metaphors in Goldblatt’s English version from the perspective of Conceptual Integration Theory.

Conclusion
This paper adopts Synaesthetic Metaphor to analyze English version of Su Tong’s Rice from the perspective of Conceptual Integration Theory. The writer uses textual analysis and new space based on CIT to study Synaesthetic Metaphor of Chinese novel Rice. The understanding of the Synaesthetic Metaphors in literary works decides whether the translation conveys the original author’s idea accurately or not. Obviously, Synaesthetic Metaphor could be found not only in literary works but also in our daily life. According to the analysis above, we can reach some conclusions on the Synaesthetic Metaphor translation from the perspective of Conceptual Integration Theory. Firstly, it can be figured out that Conceptual Integration theory is feasible into the study on English translation of Synesthetic Metaphor in Chinese contemporary novels. Synaesthetic Metaphor is a situation if a stimulus occurs in one sensory morality and it will occurs in another later. It is not only the influence of two feelings but also the communications of many physical organs. There are mappings among the cognitive domain of senses. Conceptual Integration Theory is the most basic and universal cognitive model in cognitive linguistics including four spaces: input space, generic space and blended space. After a partial mapping of counterparts between the input spaces, an emergent structure will be established under the influence of composition, completion and elaboration. That is to say, the construction and mechanism of Synaesthetic Metaphor could be explained in the frame of CIT. Moreover, there are a lot of Synaesthetic Metaphors in Chinese contemporary novels. Translators will face with lots of problems because of the different cultural models between different languages. Therefore, the application of Conceptual Integration Theory into the study of Synesthetic Metaphor translation can help translators understand the original text easier and better.
