[Abstract]:For a long time, metaphor has only been regarded as a common rhetorical device and a linguistic phenomenon. With the reflection of metaphor by researchers in various fields, metaphor has gained the groundbreaking works of. Lakoff and Johnson, "metaphors on which we live" marks the beginning of cognitive metaphor theory. These two scholars believe that metaphor exists in human language and thinking, and its essence is a conceptual tool used by human beings to understand the world around them. It is a cognitive phenomenon, Lakoff Johnson 1980: 5. Conceptual metaphor is an important concept in cognitive linguistics. It is a cognitive activity in which human beings use a concrete concept domain to explain or understand another relatively abstract concept domain. Human emotion and cognition interact and affect each other. The study of human emotion constitutes one of the basic contents of exploring human cognition. Emotion is rich and abstract. In order to express and understand these emotions, people often metaphorize them, that is, to understand and express complex, abstract concepts by using familiar and concrete ideas or concepts. Psychologists believe that some human emotions tend to be more basic and typical than others. Paul Ekmen's view of emotion is very popular in the field of psychology and compatible with evolutionary thought. He believes that basic emotions are those associated with facial expressions, including anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness and surprise Ekman 1982: 39-55. From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, this paper makes a contrastive study of the four basic affective metaphor expressions in English and Chinese, such as joy, anger, sadness and fear, and focuses on the similarities and differences of their metaphorical expressions in the two languages. To find out the influence of human experience and cultural differences between English and Chinese on the construction of four affective metaphors in the two languages. Through comparison, it is found that the use of conceptual metaphors of joy, anger, sadness and fear in English and Chinese shows great similarity, and at the same time, the difference between them can not be ignored. The similarity is because English and Chinese metaphors are derived from the same physical and material experiences and have a common cognitive and physiological basis; differences are attributed to the influence of different cultural backgrounds and values. This paper attempts to explain this cultural difference through geography, cultural values and traditional Chinese medicine theory.
