[Abstract]:The clarity and accuracy of language expression is the ideal state pursued by language users, but fuzziness exists everywhere. Fuzzy language is the essential feature of natural language. Since Zadeh (1963) put forward "fuzzy set theory", fuzzy phenomenon has attracted more and more attention. Professor Wu Tieping believes that the vague phenomenon in language can be seen everywhere, and the ability of communication can be reflected through the mastery of vague language. On the definition of fuzziness, it is generally accepted by scholars that vague language is a language with definite connotation, vague extension, or clear semantics, but it has a fuzzy feature in pragmatics. Fuzzy language can fully reflect the communication skills and strategies of language. The study of vague language involves semantic, pragmatic and rhetorical fields, including news, commerce, law, diplomacy and so on. However, there are few researches on vague hedges in news language at international economic summit. In this paper, some important concepts in relevance theory, such as "ostensive-inferential principle" and "optimal relevance", are reviewed. These concepts play an important role in the understanding of vague language in diplomatic language, which lays the groundwork for the relevance theory to analyze fuzzy language in diplomatic language and to explain its function from the perspective of cognition. Based on quantitative and qualitative research methods and the framework of relevance theory, this paper explains various types of hedges from lexical and syntactic levels, using G20 leaders' speeches, press conferences and other materials as materials. This paper analyzes how the speaker expresses his intention through hedges and how the listener achieves the best relevance through inference. The study found that the hedges in diplomatic situations make the language appear more tactful and implicit, thus preserving the face of the listener, avoiding embarrassment, and skillfully avoiding the speaker from shouldering unnecessary responsibilities. It fully reflects the flexibility of diplomatic language and the wisdom of diplomats.
