[Abstract]:In the late Qing Dynasty, the Western powers' aggression against China deepened, the decadent Qing Dynasty was about to perish, and the survival of the nation was at stake. In order to save the nation, Chinese intellectuals have translated a large number of social science theoretical works and literary works from the West. Liang Qichao, Yan Fu and Lin Shu were outstanding translators of this period. Their works are popular, enlighten the people and inspire the morale of the Chinese nation against the great powers. Through the comparative analysis of their translations and original works, the present study finds that they have all rewritten the original works without exception. Rewriting the original was a significant social phenomenon at the time. However, the traditional prescriptive translation theory focuses on the original text and emphasizes linguistic equivalence. It is obvious that this theory cannot explain the rewriting phenomenon in the process of translation. The school of translation studies developed in the 1970s advocates descriptive study of translation, which combines translation studies with sociocultural factors, and rewrites the theory of rewriting put forward by. Andre Lefevere. It is one of the representative theories of translation studies. The theory points out that translation is rewriting rather than simply converting from one language to another. By placing translation studies in a broad social context, Lefevere highlights the manipulation of translation by controlling factors. The present study uses rewriting theory to analyze the translation of the three translators and tries to explore the causes of this rewriting phenomenon. Through the analysis and comparison of ideology, poetics and patronage, the author describes the rewriting of the three translators and explains why the original is rewritten in the process of being introduced into the country, that is, ideology. Poetics and patrons manipulate the selection, theme, translation strategy and spread of the translation. At the same time, this paper makes a contrastive analysis and explanation of the different popularity of the three translations from the perspective of rewriting theory. Finally, it is pointed out that the manipulation of translation by sociocultural factors should not be ignored when studying the translation works of this period.
