超越怀旧：论《故园重游》中的传统观

伊夫林·沃是英国现代最为重要的小说家之一。在其众多代表作中,《故园重游》是最畅销的一部,它也代表了沃创作的转折。不同于他早期的讽刺小说,这部作品的调子变得严肃,一贯的冷嘲热讽被怀恋往昔的浪漫情怀所取代。《故园重游》以第一人称自述,由主人公查尔斯·赖德的回忆展现出来,描写了二战爆发前他与伦敦近郊布赖兹赫德庄园里一个信奉天主教的贵族家庭马奇梅因一家相处的经历,回忆当中流露出对英国过往岁月的深刻怀念。该小说曾经的相关研究大多停留在“怀旧”表层,未关注小说主人公在态度上经历了从沉湎过去到回归当下、由遁世到入世的变化,且在这一过程中于思想深处对传统有了新的认知——对过去的传统除了肯定,又进而发掘到它对当下现实改造的积极作用。因此本文以小说主人公赖德为主要案例,旨在通过揭露赖德对怀旧情怀的超越,从他在追忆过往的反思中对本民族相关文化传统的认知来探究小说中的传统观。本文在文本细读的基础上并结合相关理论,以赖德的情感转变为线性逻辑,从关注文化传承的角度来研究《故园重游》中的传统观,于传统与现代融合的框架中依次分析:小说中所向往的过去文化语境下的传统;现实中的现代性困境;传统被带到现代情境中延续发展的原...
