[Abstract]:Eric Hawkins gave inexperienced dance audiences reasonable advice for the first time.In short, he advises viewers not to be preconceived, to believe in their sensory reactions to action, and to engage fully in the experience. The biggest problem is that Puritan traditions (often unconsciously) believe that human action is suspicious, immoral, and often leads us to doubt any sensory reaction to it.The second problem is their preference for analysis-they can't appreciate an art work unless they understand its meaning. The fact is that with the use of abstraction, all art operates on two levels. In other words, there is no comprehensible thing in many dances-no information, no plot-only beautifully designed, smooth, and forcefully moving movements.Perhaps a commentary should be used to alert viewers to what they should expect and look for as they watch each work.
