《儒林外史》英译本中的厚翻译研究

【摘要】：中国著名翻译家杨宪益和夫人戴乃迭合译的TheScholars是《儒林外史》的英译全译本。杨宪益夫妇秉承忠实原则最大限度地保留原作的特征,并在文中适当地加入增译信息及注释。这些增译及注释构成该译本一个重要的翻译特征,即"厚翻译"翻译策略。"厚翻译"是由美国非裔哲学家克威姆·阿派尔在1993年完成的《厚翻译》一文中提出来的,即通过各种注释和注解将文本放置到一个更加丰富的文化和语言环境里的翻译,使目标语读者能够充分理解源语作品,并且在目标语文化中起到其文本在其源语言文化中同样的意识形态作用,进而使目标语读者对具有不同文化背景的人们的表达方式及文化给予充分的理解和尊重。厚翻译注重保留源语言文化特征,通过在注释和注解中介绍本民族的文化和传统,增强不同文化之间人们的相互了解。该理论对于文学翻译具有重要意义。本文以厚翻译为理论视角对TheScholars进行翻译特征分析,采用描述翻译学的方法对其厚翻译的使用进行描述。随后,笔者对于该翻译现象出现的原因进行了分析,分别从意识形态、诗学和赞助人三个方面考察其对译者的影响。可以说,当时的社会意识形态、译者的意识形态、中国盛行的翻译信条及政治背景和政府工作人员作为赞助人角色直接或间接地对译者产生影响。杨宪益夫妇在中国翻译史上做出了重大贡献。《儒林外史》英译本作为他们对外传播中国传统文化的媒介之一,最大限度地保留了中国特有的表达方式及文化现象,使西方人深度了解并尊重中国传统文化。本论文抓住了 The Scholars的厚翻译特色,证明了厚翻译在杨宪益夫妇《儒林外史》译本中的合理性及价值,并且进一步明确了厚翻译现象在译本中出现的形式及发挥的功能,以期对译学研究提供一种新的解释。
[Abstract]:The translation of TheScholars by Yang Xianyi, a famous Chinese translator, and his wife, Dai Nadii, is an English translation of the History of Confucianism. In keeping with the principle of faithfulness, Yang Xianyi and his wife retain the features of the original work to the maximum extent, and add additional translation information and annotations to the text as appropriate. These additions and annotations constitute an important translation feature of the translation, that is, the translation strategy of "thick translation". " Thick translation "was proposed by the African-American philosopher Kweim Apal in his 1993 translation of thick translation, in which the text was placed in a richer cultural and linguistic environment through various annotations and annotations." So that the target language readers can fully understand the source language works and play the same ideological role in the target language culture as the text in its source language culture. So that the target language readers can fully understand and respect the expression and culture of people with different cultural backgrounds. This theory is of great significance to literary translation. This paper analyzes the translation characteristics of TheScholars from the perspective of thick translation and describes the use of thick translation by descriptive translation. Then, the author analyzes the causes of the phenomenon, and examines its influence on the translator from three aspects: ideology, poetics and patronage. It can be said that the social ideology the translator's ideology the prevailing Chinese translation creed and political background and the role of government staff as patrons directly or indirectly influence the translator. Yang Xianyi and his wife have made great contributions to the history of Chinese translation. As one of the media for spreading Chinese traditional culture to the outside world, the English version of "the History of Confucianism" retains to the greatest extent the unique expression and cultural phenomenon of China. To make Westerners deeply understand and respect Chinese traditional culture. This thesis grasps The Scholars's feature of thick translation, proves the rationality and value of thick translation in the translation of Yang Xianyi and his wife's History of Confucianism, and further clarifies the form and function of the phenomenon of thick translation in the translation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a new explanation for the study of translatology.
