[Abstract]:The novel "Castle of Auranto" is not long, depicting a dark place full of ghosts, weirdness, deformity and superstition, such as dark castles, dark rooms and labyrinth of underground passages. These incredible descriptions, and the author's indulgence in the extreme feelings that describe human beings, namely passion, fear, impulse, and desire, enveloped the whole novel in an atmosphere of absurdity and fascination. Critics, especially realist scholars, have long regarded the Castle of Otlanto as a rebellion and a break with the style of the 18th-century rational literature, giving the novel a fierce critique. However, the author finds that the novel's bizarre depiction is not just intended to arouse readers' feelings of awe or fear in their hearts. A more striking function is that the novel conceals moral connotations in these seemingly absurd descriptions. To some extent, this moral connotation is compatible with the fashion of advocating rationality in the 18 th century. Devil worship was equated with sin in the religious doctrine of the 18 th century. Those who trade with the devil in pursuit of their endless evil desires have long been the object of criticism. Given the restoration of faith, morality, justice, and religious justice at the end of the novel, Volpo's villains seem to lay a solid foundation for the restoration mentioned above, despite their indulgence in the cult of the devil. The author thinks that Volpo's perception of evil and ugliness is no less than that of the realist. The difference between the two is that he tends to expose the social reality from the dark side of society and touch the deepest part of the reader's heart to enlighten the reader. Although these seemingly absurd descriptions pervading the surface seem to undermine the faithfulness and credibility of the novel, the enlightening significance of the novel Castle of Autrato can never be ignored. It is regrettable, however, that this has not received enough attention so far. Therefore, this thesis first explores the realistic factors contained in the novel Castle of Auranto, which are in line with the trend of realistic literature in the 18th century. At the same time, through the analysis of literary giants, especially William Shakespeare's literary creation practice, it is further proved that Volpo's attention to the reality and the writer's responsibility for enlightenment should be further proved. And the author of the paper used Thomas in an ingenious way. Reimer's principle of poetic justice defends the writer's moral sense and view of justice. In the last 20 to 30 years of the eighteenth century, the Augustus principles of order, moderation, balance, and propriety were not enough to solve the confusion, confrontation, and suffering of modern society. Against such a background of uncertainty Gothic novels are favored by readers mostly because of their yearning for the distant Middle Ages and arousing the readers' interest and enthusiasm with absurd fanaticism. To a certain extent, the mystery and controversy of Gothic novels is precisely a manifestation of this uncertainty, and also foreshadowed the arrival of a romantic era full of mystery and controversy. In the third chapter, the author elaborates on the different human nature of the protagonists in the novel, and excavates the core content of the romantic ideology contained in the novel Castle of Autranto: the reverence for imagination. The last part of the thesis focuses on the perfect balance between the attention to the real society and the romantic feelings in Volpo's novel, the Castle of Autranto.
