[Abstract]:As a novelist and a short story writer, Salinger had little to write, but just one Catcher in the Rye made him a man of the world. This novel is regarded as one of the greatest novels in the 20th century. For the novel, critics have also done a variety of research, such as its language, theme, narrative and so on. They comment on the novel from symbolism, existentialism, Marxism, feminism, psychoanalysis and so on, which makes the interpretation of Catcher in the Rye present a trend of diversification. However, few critics really study the work from a narrative point of view, let alone narrative communication. At the same time, as a new subject, narratology was declared dead by some narratologists in the 1990s, but in fact, the vitality of narratology is far from stopping, which provides a more scientific and rational way to interpret classical works. In this paper, the author tries to provide a new method for the study of Catcher in the Rye from the perspective of rhetorical narration. Rhetorical narration emphasizes that on the basis of text analysis, attention should be paid to the communication and interaction among the author, the text and the reader, as well as the narrative techniques by which the author can complete the narrative and at the same time attract the reader's approval. Although Wayne Booth did not put forward the concept of "rhetoric narrative" in his monograph rhetoric, he paid close attention to the relationship between author, narrator, character and reader, which laid a foundation for the development of rhetorical narration. In narration as rhetoric, James Fellen defines it as "someone tells a particular story for a particular purpose, in a particular situation, for a particular audience", which actually equates narrative with rhetoric. It has a great influence on the study of narrative communication. Rhetorical narrative pays attention to narrative as well as rhetoric, which is the theoretical basis of the author's study of Catcher in the Rye. From the perspective of rhetorical narration, the author tries to interpret the narrative communication of the Catcher in the Rye, and how Salinger skillfully narrates the communication with the reader to produce what rhetorical effect. It is hoped that this study will contribute to this great work.
