[Abstract]:The growth story records the protagonist's growth from child to adult, and usually takes the realization of the hero's goal as the ending of the story. The works of Paula Anne Vogel, a new generation of American playwright, focus on the life of American teenagers, reflect their confusion and troubles in their growing up, and reveal the influence of environmental factors such as family, society and other environmental factors on the growth of young people. Although it is a drama, but with very obvious characteristics of the growth novel. This paper attempts to analyze the growth of female characters in Vogel's plays and to explore the current situation and growth process of contemporary American teenagers. The thesis consists of four chapters. First of all, the thesis discusses the theory of the growth novel, and focuses on the analysis and interpretation of the related theory of the female growth novel. Like most novels, female initiation novels are unique in focusing on the needs of female characters and counteracting gender bias. Then, the second chapter takes several plays of Vogel as a case study to study the growth of the main female characters. In Meg, Meg tried to be a success in the public sphere, but because of political struggle and family pressure, she finally had to compromise to the patriarchal society. In Mileola twins, twins are born at odds and struggle with each other until one becomes a busy housewife and the other a bohemian professional woman. In this part, the author focuses on the discussion of the growing up of Little Betty, the heroine in how I learn to drive. In her growing up, the environment of family and society had a profound influence on her from childish to mature. The playwright takes Uncle Betty Peck as a clue to teach her to learn to drive, thus metaphors Betty's growing process from obscurity and self-awareness to final "control", thus revealing the common problems encountered in the process of women's growing up. Through the analysis, the paper points out, through the description of Little Betty's successful growth history, the playwright hopes that women will not only strive for their rights and interests, but also struggle for the freedom of sex in the process of growing up; Sex as a necessary journey in the process of growth, women should not fear, avoid and passive, should be active, active learning and even become a means of victory. In the third chapter, we discuss the effect of drama art on performance and theme from the perspective of Vogel's writing skills. By rewriting and reconstructing the classical works, Vogel subverts the tragic ending of the women in the original works and endows them with new vitality and inspiration. Through the use of nonlinear narrative techniques, the story plot is more complex, the theme can be highlighted, so that readers and viewers of the fate of the protagonist have resonance and compassion; Through humorous language, serious themes are accepted by readers and viewers. The reason why Vogel was able to create an excellent play which is close to the social reality and reflects the growing history of American women has something to do with her own growing up experience. This is the same as the application of autobiographical elements in the growth novel. Therefore, the fourth chapter discusses the relationship between Vogel's works and her life experience, and reveals its profound connotation. Vogel creates all kinds of female characters in her works, who grow up dreaming or struggling with tragic fate. Vogel's work raises many questions, but answers await the audience and the reader. The enlightening and question consciousness of her drama is self-evident.
