[Abstract]:Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's most important tragic works and marks the highest achievement of Shakespeare's plays. This work has been loved by people since it was introduced, and it has also aroused academic discussion and research. Gadfly is the most representative work of Irish female writer Ellie Voynich, and it is also her most successful work. The authors of the two novels are in different periods and have different life experiences. The themes and styles of literary creation are different, but the protagonists in the two works have the same destiny. Shakespeare's Hamlet turned from a happy prince to melancholy after learning that his father had been murdered and his mother remarried, and assumed the historical task of avenging his father and changing the fate of the country. Gadfly mainly tells the story of Arthur, the protagonist, from a devout Christian to a revolutionary against Austrian rule. Both characters were influenced by humanism and Christianity to varying degrees, and both went to death. In this paper, these two works as the text for a comparative study. Guided by tragic theory, Christian doctrine, humanism and new humanism. This paper first analyzes the similarities and differences of the characters of the two protagonists, and then analyzes the tragic causes of the death of the two protagonists. On this basis, this paper probes into the relationship between the progress of European humanism and Christianity. This paper studies the two protagonists in Hamlet and Gadfly in depth and breadth. This study is helpful to interpret the connotation of these two works and the views of writers, and lay a foundation for further research and discussion in the future.
