论麦尔维尔的悲剧倾向及其在作品中的体现

麦尔维尔是公认的美国十九世纪文学史上最伟大的作家之一,其代表作《白鲸》以其惊心动魄的捕鲸场面,对哲学孜孜以求的深层探索,并配以浪漫史诗般的风格达到了美国十九世纪小说的巅峰。然而,麦尔维尔在世时,倍受冷落,无人问津。直到二十世纪二十年代,麦尔维尔及其作品重见天日,同时掀起了复兴麦尔维尔的热潮,并涌现了大量相关的评论文章,麦尔维尔作为伟大作家的地位也因此得到了确立。时至今日,麦尔维尔本人及其作品仍深为人们所关注。然而,经过大量调查研究,笔者发现,虽然研究其代表作《白鲸》及其《白鲸》中悲剧因素者不乏其人,但极少有人关注其后期作品《皮埃尔》和《比利·巴德》以及这些作品中的悲剧因素,更不用说这三部悲剧作品中折射出的共同元素。事实上,研究发现,三部悲剧作品均与麦尔维尔的悲剧倾向密切相关。麦尔维尔一生坎坷,壮志难酬。母亲的冷落,家庭的变故,社会转型带来的巨大变化,尤其是写作上的屡屡失败,再加上本人天生悲剧气质铸就了麦尔维尔强烈的悲剧倾向,而这种悲剧倾向必然要体现在其作品中,并在作品中表现出了作者的悲剧观念,从而也就有了写作风格上从前期海洋小说到后期悲剧小说的转变,并因此产生了诸如《白鲸》、《皮埃尔》...
