Abstract:Languageplaysanimportantroleincommunication,sharingandconveyinginformationforhumanbeings.GISlanguageisveryimportantinunderstanding,researching,representingandtransmittinggeographicalinformation.Itgraduallyevolvesanddevelopswithpromotionofthescienceandtechnologyprogressandcognitionlevel.Concerningwiththetheoreticalprogressesfromthegeographicalinformationontology,espistemologyandlinguistictheory,thispaperfirstlyproposestheconceptionandbasicfeaturesofGISlanguageaccordingtothegeographicallanguage'schangesinlanguagestructure,functionandcharacteristics.GISlanguagecouldberegardedasasyntheticanddigitalsymbolicsystem.Itisacomprehensiverepresentationofgeographicalobjects,phenomenonandtheirspatialdistributionanddynamicprocesses.Thisrepresentationhelpsustogenerateauniversalperceptionofgeographyspacebythegeographicalscenariosorsymbolswithgeometry,status,processes,temporal-spatialrelationship,semanticandattributionfeatures.Furthermore,thispaperstatesthatGISlanguageisanewgenerationgeographicallanguagebyitsintrinsiccharacteristics,structure,functionsandsystematiccontent.Astheformer'stheoreticalfoundation,thepaperdefinitelyillustratestheimportantstatusandcontributionsoftheGISlanguagetogeographicalresearches.Allinall,GISlanguageisthenewgeographicallanguagewithsomenewfeaturesincludingtemporal-spatialmulti-dimensionrepresentation,interactivevisualization,virtualgeographicalscenario,multi-sensorsensing,expedientlybroadcastingwithweb,incurrentnewera.

GISlanguageisthehighestlevelofgeographicallanguagebecauseitintegratesthesemanticdefinition,featuresextraction,geographicaldynamicrepresentationandtemporal-spatialunifyingcomputationofgeographicalobjects.GISlanguagehavefiveimportantcharacteristics:abstraction,systemization,strictness,definitionandhierarchicalstructure.Insummary,GISlanguageprovidesanewtoolfortherecognition,understandingandsimulationofthewholegeographicalenvironments.So,theexplorationofGISlanguage'sfunctionincontemporarygeographicaldevelopmentbecomesincreasinglyimportant.Meanwhile,theconstructionoftheconceptualmodelandscientificsystemsofGISlanguagewillpromotethedevelopmentofgeographydisciplineandgeographicalinformationsciences.Therefore,thepaperforecaststheGISlanguage'sfuturedevelopmentfromtheviewpointsofdigitaltechnologies,geographynorm,geographydisciplinedevelopmentandgeographicalmodeling.
