笛福小说中的帝国意识研究

作为英国著名的作家与政治册作家,丹尼尔·笛福与他的作品在过去的几个世纪里一直备受世界瞩目。在笛福近60岁之时,他开始了其首部小说《鲁滨逊漂流记》的创作。此后,他还创作了《辛格顿船长》与《杰克上校》等多部小说。上述三部作品中的主人公鲁滨逊﹑辛格顿与杰克皆以第一人称叙事视角讲述了自己的海外冒险经历,他们以不同方式参与了大英帝国领土的扩张和帝国意识的构建。本文以后殖民主义理论为基础,尤其运用了赛义德对帝国意识的分析,对笛福上述三本小说中的帝国意识进行了全面深入的探究。英国18世纪初兴起的小说成为这一历史时期对帝国的主要想象形式,小说与帝国的形成和扩张无形中形成了一种共谋的关系。18世纪的英国在海外开疆扩土,攫取财富,宣扬白人文化至上的观念,这也在笛福的三本小说中得以体现。在政治方面,帝国意识的强化推动了小说中英国的领土扩张进程。在经济方面,帝国意识的发展加快了小说中英国的财富积累。在文化方面,鲁滨逊,辛格顿与杰克都被认为是尊贵的“自我”形象,而外来种族则被认为是“他者”形象。通过对“自我”形象的优越性与“他者”形象劣根性的比较与分析,可以得出帝国意识与其宣称的文化优越性密不可分。基于以上分析...
