Theory, Experience and Practice: Reassessing the Significance of Translation Theory

In China, the legitimacy of translation theory has been a focal point in some heated debates and such debates have been conducted in a way downright detrimental to the future development of Translation Studies. The purpose in writing this paper is to help focus the current discussion on the issue of whether translation theory is useful or relevant to the practice of translation by taking certain common misconceptions about translation theory head-on and critically examining how the ill-informed prejudices and cognitive limitations of some individuals have led to a very imperfect understanding of some of the basic issues involved in translation in terms of both theory and practice. The author observes that a surprising unawareness of what translation theory is capable of doing in its function to improve translation, reified in an utterly unrealistic expectation of its direct and immediate applicability to practice, is one of the major reasons for a somewhat skeptical or even hostile attitude to translation theory in some quarters. This paper also purports to defend the values of theory in general and translation theory in particular in an effort to dispel some of the popular misconceptions about translation theory and bring theory and practice together in a culture of greater tolerance and relative harmony.
