[Abstract]:In the 1840s, an architectural design movement with the theme of reviving the medieval Gothic style was born in England, known as the Gothic Revival Movement. The Strawberry Hills, built in 1749, was considered the starting point of the movement. And with the Westminster House of Parliament as the symbol of the reconstruction of the movement reached a climax. In a particular social and historical context, the form of Gothic revival architecture was given the political significance of evoking national identity and freedom and democracy, and the movement spread from England to Germany, France and Eastern Europe and North America. With the colonization of Britain and France, missionaries built many Gothic churches in Australia, New Zealand, India and China. The Gothic revival became an influential trend of architectural thought in the world, and inspired the birth of the first design movement, the British Arts and Crafts Movement, at the end of the 19th century. This paper will focus on the origin and course of Gothic revival movement, combing the architectural design concept in the trend of Gothic revival design, and analyzing the lofty aesthetic value of the connotation of Gothic revival architecture. In order to explore the Gothic revival of the British arts and crafts movement and later several architectural design movements.
