[Abstract]:Overseas Chinese and overseas Indians, as two large groups of immigrants in the world, are undoubtedly a feat in the history of global migration. At the same time, these two ethnic groups are closely related to China and India, which are different and more similar, so they are comparable. Based on the analysis of the history and present situation of overseas Indians and overseas Chinese immigrants to Singapore, this paper makes a comparative study on the causes of migration, economic strength, culture and education, religious belief, spouse selection mode, competitiveness and immigration (expatriate) policies between China and India, and selects the original English works and the report on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India. It also refers to the previous research results. The structure of this paper is as follows: the first chapter is the introduction, explaining the reasons for the selected topic, several basic concepts involved in this paper, the current research status and the research methods and significance of this paper. The second chapter introduces the basic situation of overseas Indians and overseas Chinese, Singapore, mainly introduces the distribution and current situation of the two immigration groups in Southeast Asia and Singapore. The third chapter is the focus of this paper, mainly the comparative study between Indians and Chinese in Singapore, involving economic strength, occupation and social status, culture and education, religious associations, spouse choice and so on. The fourth chapter is about the influence of overseas Indians and overseas Chinese on their home countries. The fifth chapter is a simple comparison between the Chinese and Indian governments on their overseas immigration policies. The Chinese have made indelible contributions to the development and construction of Singapore, and Indians enjoy the reputation of "Singapore builders". Through the comparison of the two major migrant groups in Singapore, we find that, as the first and third largest ethnic groups in Singapore, the Chinese and Indians in Singapore have great similarities in many aspects, such as the process of immigration, the process of struggle, and the connection with their respective home countries. Of course, there are also great differences between the two ethnic groups emigrating from different religions and ethnic backgrounds to Singapore. On the whole, the economic strength and social status of the Chinese are stronger than those of the Indians, and the religious associations and marriages are freer. At the micro level, Indians are higher than the Chinese in the level of education and culture. The differences between the two ethnic groups have changed greatly in different historical periods with the passage of time. For example, during the British colonial rule, the economic strength of Indians was better than that of Chinese. There is no apparent conflict between overseas Indians and overseas Chinese in Singapore, but it is a potential competitor against the backdrop of a covert struggle between China and India. These two major population groups will have a significant impact on Singapore, India and the long-term development of the three countries in China. In a word, Indians and Chinese, as two major ethnic groups developed and built in Singapore, have a strong comparability. Based on this, this paper chooses Singapore in Southeast Asia as a case study at a time when the academic community is on the rise to make comparative studies between overseas Indians and overseas Chinese.
