[Abstract]:Modern science was born without exception in a country where Christianity prevailed. The complex relationship between Christianity and modern science has long been debated in academia. In fact, as a historical event, modern science was influenced by almost all the factors at that time. Christianity, as the mainstream ideology at that time, played a very complicated role in modern science. Understanding the origin of Christianity and modern science is more important for us to understand the influence of social factors on science. In the debate, there are three common views, namely, conflict theory, irrelevant theory and harmony theory. But the arguments over these points of view have been fruitless. Recent popular views, represented by John H. Brooke, author of Science and Religion, form a complex view. This view takes the historical facts as the starting point and tries not to be influenced by the previous viewpoints, and makes a detailed textual research on the specific historical events and makes the objective judgment as far as possible. However, although there are many articles on the relationship between religion and science in China, it is rare to probe deeply into the positive role of Christianity in modern science beyond various pre-conditions. This paper tries to make a tentative discussion on the positive role of Christianity in various factors that contribute to the origin of modern science, although the purport of Christianity is not for the birth of science, but its positive role must have its limits. This paper analyzes the causes of the origin of modern science and holds that Christianity has made a positive contribution to the rise of modern science in terms of ideology, organization and social factors. The basis of this analysis is that we have abandoned the views of conflict, irrelevance and harmony in the relationship between religion and science, and adopted the attitude of complexity.
