[Abstract]:Human emotions are rich and difficult to copy. Emotion can be expressed not only by non-verbal means, but also by language, which is a unique medium for human beings. Cognitive linguistics studies language from the perspective of human cognition, probes into the relationship between cognition and language, and analyzes the cognitive orientation of language reflection. The study of affective representation can provide insight into the cognitive motivations behind the conceptualization of human emotions. Cognitive metaphor theory holds that metaphor is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a cognitive way, which is embodied in thinking and activities. Cognitive studies of affective concepts show that metaphor and metonymy play an important role in conceptualization. It is in this context that this paper, in combination with the English-Chinese corpus, makes a comparative analysis of the four core emotions (joy, anger, sadness, fear) in the cognitive models of metaphor and metonymy. This paper probes into the similarities and differences in affective representation between English and Chinese and analyzes its cognitive and cultural causes. The results show that both English and Chinese affections are conceptualized by metaphor and metonymy. Based on the same human body experience, there are a lot of conceptual representations in English and Chinese languages, which can be summed up as a root metaphorical-emotion is the force of emotion. Both English and Chinese follow the same metonymy principle: expressing emotions through emotional physiological, psychological and behavioral responses, but there are differences in specific body organs, which can be explained by the cultural model behind conceptualization. In addition, the role of metaphor and metonymy in conceptualization and the relationship between metaphor and cultural patterns are also explained.
